Varieties of mango

Spanish mangos are generally rich in colour with reds, greens, yellow and tricolor varieties which make them quite aesthetically pleasing. They all boast a unique, exotic and exquisite taste of as well as a hypnotic aroma.

Their aroma and flavor can be fully enjoyed when the mango is perfectly ripe which allows us to discover its essence through tasting it through both our nose and mouth. One can tell a mango´s perfect point of ripeness when the skin gives way to light pressure on the area around the stalk.

The majority of mangos have an oval shape and thick and resistant skin. The mangos from Axarquía give off an exotic perfume and have a sweet taste. They are of excellent quality and they normally have a small stone which represents approximately 6-8% of the total weight of the fruit. The size of the stone varies depending on the variety of mango.

These mangos have a pulp fruit, which is orange in colour, juicy and refreshing with a sweet and special taste, making them one of the best fruits in the world.

In the region of La Axarquía, 5 different varieties of mangos are produced:

  • Osteen (the most common and the variety which represents 65% of the mangos produced)
  • Kent(5 % of the mangos produced)
  • Tommy Atkins (5 % of the mangos produced)
