Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Also called Riboflavin, vitamin B2 participates in the formation of antibodies and red corpuscles and in the production of energy. It improves vision and helps keep the skin and mucous membranes healthy.

This vitamin is necessary for the production of enzymes which liberate the energy of the fats, carbohydrates and proteins which we get from eating foods. It is a hydro soluble vitamin, essential for growth, which helps the immune system maintain a healthy state in the mucous membranes of the respiratory and digestive systems.

It is important to eats foods rich in vitamin B2 during pregnancy in order to prevent malformation of the bones and problems of cerebral development in the baby.

A lack of this vitamin is quite common in adolescents, sportsmen and sportswomen, the aged and pregnant women. It may also be caused by inadequate diet or an excess of physical activity. The symptoms which may appear include a lack of energy, disorders of the eye, mouth and skin, anaemia, slow healing, muscular weakness, nervousness or depression, fatigue etc. The deficiency of vitamin B2 is usually related to iron deficiency as the riboflavin facilitates its absorption.
