Iron


Nutritional facts

Iron is a necessary mineral for life, although it is only present in small quantities in our body.

It is necessary for the production of haemoglobin (charged with the transport of oxygen to the tissues) and takes part in cellular respiration. One of its most important functions is to oxidise the glucose in order to convert it into energy.

Iron is also important in activating the vitamin B group, stimulating immunity and increasing physical stamina.

Vitamin C favours its assimilation throughout the body. In cases of iron deficiency, symptoms such as fatigue, anaemia, infections, lowering of defences and gastrointestinal disorders may arise.

An adequate consumption of iron is especially important for women (they need a higher quantity during menstruation) and for children (the deficiency of this mineral affects behaviour and learning processes).
