Phosphorous is the second most abundant mineral in the body (1%), closely related to calcium.

It forms part of the molecules of high energy content, for which it permits the storage and use of energy. Together with calcium it is essential for the structure of bones and teeth. It also aids in maintaining nerve and muscle activity.

Phosphorous increases the stamina of athletes, giving them competitive advantages.

As it is found in the majority of foods it is rare that there is a deficiency of this mineral. Such may occur in diseases of the kidney, in persons with vitamin D deficiency, hyperthyroidism or in cases of alcoholism. Some symptoms of this are muscular weakness, problems of the softening of bones, and disturbances in the nervous system (mental fatigue, insomnia, pins and needles, slowing of reflexes etc).
